What to Wear to a Rooftop Bar

Wind, a temperature drop after sunset, and a floor that is not a ballroom. Dress for the elevation, not the Instagram caption.

What to Wear to a Rooftop Bar — still life for this Occasions guide on Nonchallant

Wind is the stylist

Unlined chiffon becomes a flag. Hair worn down becomes a problem in someone else’s drink. A $60–$140 merino crew or a shirt with a real drape, under a jacket you can keep on, is the useful stack. Hats need a fit, not a wide brim you will hold all night.

Heels and rooftop floors

Many rooftops are wood, composite, or metal grate. A stiletto heel is a tent peg, same as on garden grass. A 1.5–2 inch block, a wedge, or a flat leather shoe. If the dress code of the building is ‘no sneakers,’ they mean mesh running shoes, not a leather court shoe.

Summer sun, winter coats

Daytime rooftops in July need a brim and a fabric that does not cling — linen, cotton, merino, not viscose. Evening in October needs the coat you will actually wear, not the one that only looks right in the elevator selfie. You can check a coat downstairs sometimes; do not assume it.

Questions, answered

Are jeans acceptable?
Dark, clean jeans at most rooftop bars, with a real shoe and a real top. Not at a hotel bar that printed cocktail.
Can I wear a long dress?
If the hem will not catch on furniture and the cloth has weight. A trailing chiffon on a grate is how evenings end early.
What about a leather jacket?
A $80–$250 leather or suede jacket is the right weight for wind. A fashion crop that does not close is not a layer.
