One notch under the wedding, not a rehearsal of it
If you already know the wedding is black tie, wear a dark suit or a cocktail midi tonight and save the tux and the gown. If the wedding is garden-casual, tonight can be chinos and a dress shirt. Repeating the wedding outfit at the engagement party makes the album confusing and the actual day feel used.
White, ivory, and pale gold still photograph as a second bride. The couple can wear whatever they want; you cannot.
Venue does more work than the word ‘party’
A booked restaurant with low light wants crepe, wool, a leather shoe, maybe a tie. A daytime backyard wants linen, a block heel that will not sink, and a layer for wind. A bar with a DJ is club-adjacent — dark denim of real weight, not a ball skirt.

Jewelry, gifts, and not making it a fashion show
Small gold or silver, not a chandelier that fights their ring. A bottle in the $20–$40 range if they drink, or nothing if the invite said no gifts. You are there to clink a glass, not to be the best-dressed stranger in the group photo.

- A knee-length cocktail in matte cloth is the ceiling for most restaurant parties. A sequin mini is a different event.
- Can men skip the tie?
- Yes in most US rooms. Bring one and put it on if the fathers are all in ties.
