Conference room versus restaurant versus yard
A 4pm sheet cake in the office is work clothes. Do not change into a sequin. A booked dinner at 7pm is a dark jacket, a midi or a suit, the same band as a client meal. A Saturday barbecue at their house is weekend-nice: dark jeans or chinos, a knit, a shoe you can stand on a deck in.

If you are the retiree
Wear something you like in the photographs. A navy jacket and a shirt you can sit in. You may give a speech. Avoid a costume unless that is genuinely your personality and your spouse has already approved the photos.
Gifts, toasts, and not upstaging
This is their night. Do not wear a louder outfit than the person leaving. A card, a $25–$40 bottle if they drink, nothing that needs assembly on a restaurant table. Closed shoes. A jacket you can drape when the room is hot.
