What to Wear to a Networking Event
A name tag has to sit on something flat. Pockets for cards. Shoes for two hours of standing on hotel carpet.

The name tag is a design constraint
Tags go on the right side so they face a handshake. A busy floral, a ruffle, a heavy necklace, and a silk scarf knot all fight the sticker. A flat lapel, a simple crew, a blouse with a stable neckline. If the tag will not stick to knit, clip it to a lapel.

Pockets are the real accessory
Cards, phone, a pen. Jacket pockets that actually open. A $90–$180 crossbody if you do not have pockets. You cannot shake hands with a plate and a coat and a tote. Eat first or not at all.
Shoes for hotel carpet
Two hours of standing. A 1–2 inch block heel or a leather oxford. New shoes will end the night early. Men: the same calf oxford as an interview, already walked. Women: test the carpet — some heels punch through pad.

- Is a suit too much?
- Finance, law, and some trade associations: wear the suit. Creative and tech mixers: blazer you can take off. Look at last year’s photos if they exist.
- Can I wear sneakers?
- Clean leather sneakers in a startup room, sometimes. A hotel ballroom with nametags and a cash bar still wants a leather shoe.
- What color?
- Navy, charcoal, olive, a solid that photographs. You will be in other people’s phone pictures. A loud novelty print becomes your name.
