Gold Filled vs Gold Vermeil: Which Finish Lasts?
Both are real gold over a cheaper core. The difference is the core, the legal minimums, and how they die.

The cores are different metals
Gold-filled is almost always bonded to jeweler's brass. Vermeil is gold over sterling (925). If the gold wears through on filled jewelry you see yellow-brown brass. On vermeil you see silver, then eventually the copper in sterling as it tarnishes. Neither is a fake; both are sandwiches.
US vermeil must be at least 10k gold and 2.5 microns thick over sterling. That is thicker than fashion plate and thinner than a filled sheet. European sellers often print “vermeil” on anything gold-colored over silver. Ask for microns, not adjectives.
Where each finish actually wins
Rings, cuffs, and the backs of hoops that sleep on a pillow: gold-filled. Earrings you take off at night and a pendant that does not rub: vermeil, especially if you want a cooler tone once the gold thins. Solid 14k still wins if the budget is there — see 14k vs 18k.

How to buy without the listing lying
If the page says vermeil and gold-filled in the same sentence, it is confused or plated. A maker who lasts will list karat, microns or 1/20 weight, and the core. That is the same honesty you want in hallmarks.

- The surface is real gold. The body is sterling. It is not a solid gold alloy.
- Does vermeil tarnish?
- The gold does not. The silver core does once the gold is breached, and sterling tarnishes around jump rings from day one.
- Which is better for a wedding band budget?
- Neither. Buy solid gold for a ring that is supposed to outlive a job. Filled is the compromise for fashion rings you will replace.
