Best Pillows for Side Sleepers

Side sleepers need height, not softness. The gap from mattress to ear is the whole product.

Measure the gap, not the marketing

Lie on your side. The distance from mattress to the side of your neck is the loft you need. Broad shoulders need more than a narrow frame. A “queen” pillow is a width, not a height. Look for fill weight and compressed loft, not “cloud.”

Fills that hold

Shredded memory foam lets you add or remove fill — useful if you share a bed with different shoulders. Solid foam is consistent and hot. Down-alternative clusters (not a single polyester batt) bounce back. Down/feather blends need a high fill-power and a chambered construction or they go flat.

Care is half the loft

A pillow protector, washed with the rest of the bedding rotation, keeps sweat out of the fill. Most foam pillows cannot go in the dryer on high. When the pillow folds in half and stays folded, it is done.

Questions, answered

Two pillows or one?
One correct loft. Two pancakes stacked is how you cook a neck.
What about a cervical pillow?
Useful if a physio sent you there. The contour must match your shoulder width or it makes things worse.
Can I use a body pillow instead?
As a supplement, yes — it stops the top shoulder rotating. It does not replace the head pillow.
