Karat is a purity number, not a quality score
Karat measures how much of the metal is gold. 24k is 99.9% and too soft for a ring. 18k is 75%. 14k is 58.3%. 10k is 41.7% and the US legal floor for something to be sold as gold. Higher karat means richer color and a lower melting point, not “better jewelry.”
European shops often default to 18k. US shops default to 14k. Neither is a trick. It is a tradition plus a hardness preference. Confirm the stamp: 14k, 585, 18k, or 750. A piece with no stamp is not automatically fake, but you should test it before paying solid-gold money.
Hardness, color, and what actually scratches
18k is visibly warmer. Next to 14k on the same chain, 18k reads almost honey. 14k reads like classic yellow school-ring gold. Rose 14k (more copper) is a different look again and slightly harder still.
Rings take the beating. 18k bands mushroom at the edges over a decade of desks and weights. 14k keeps a square edge longer. Chains fail at solder joints and lobster clasps, not at karat. Buy a quality clasp before you buy a higher karat.

White gold is a different conversation
White 14k and white 18k are gold alloys plated with rhodium. The white you see is the plating. It needs a refresh every 12–24 months if you wear it daily. If you hate maintenance, yellow 14k or gold-filled is simpler — see gold-filled versus plated before you default to white.
What to buy once
A 14k 1.8mm box chain, 18 inches, with a soldered jump ring, is the single most useful gold object most people can own. Add one shorter chain later. Save 18k for a pendant or hoop where color is the point.

- Does 14k gold tarnish?
- Yellow 14k does not tarnish the way silver does. It can look dull from lotion film. A polishing cloth brings it back. White 14k loses rhodium, which looks like tarnish but is the plating wearing off.
- Is 18k too soft for a wedding band?
- It works if you want the color and accept more dents. A 14k or 18k band with a slight comfort-fit and 1.8mm+ thickness survives better than a knife-edge 18k band.
- Can I mix 14k and 18k?
- Yes. On the neck the color shift is visible in daylight. Mix on purpose — a 14k chain with an 18k pendant — or keep one karat per stack.
